You guuuuuuuuys!
There are so many things to catch up on. Let’s start with my favorite part of this week…
My birthday! Wednesday was my birthday and I’m now officially twenty-four years of age. And you know what’s funny? This is the first birthday EVER that I’ve actually felt older. The good news is I still get carded when I buy alcohol… I’m only 5’3, and you just can’t trust a shorty.
That would be the night of my 21st birthday, obviously a few years ago but not much has changed… Anyway so this year, since I’m smack in the middle of the busiest year of my life I decided I didn’t really care about celebrating my birthday all that much. I just wanted to go out for dinner (coughsuchafoodiecough). Insert: Rocco’s Tacos.
This is one of those restaurants that I’ve been meaning to go to since the day I moved down to Florida. I have no idea why it took me so long to finally go, but this place is seriously amazing. It’s not a chain per-say, but there are a few scattered in the Fort Lauderdale/Palm Beach area and one in Orlando. We decided to go to the one on Las Olas, naturally, because I love downtown Ft Laud and it was the closest.
When there is a 30 minute wait for a table on a Wednesday night, you know it’s a good place. We decided to wait at the bar and order some drinks; whiskey and gingerale for him, margarita on the rocks for her. I complimented the bartender on her margarita-making-skills and thanked her for not trying to kill me with sour mix. She said she just made it the way she likes her margaritas and hoped I wouldn’t think it was too strong, but I like a strong drink, okay? Never judge me.
One thing I knew Rocco’s to be famous for is their guacamole. They roll right up with a little “guac station” on a cart and make it tableside. I make a mean guac but they one-upped me, big time. A very humbling yet delicious experience. Oh and not to mention their chips came out hot, fresh and perfectly seasoned.
Typically I order fajitas when I go out for Mexican because I like when they bring the sizzling plate of goodies out to your table and can assemble things how you like. So I was scanning the menu and I’m like what the hell, where are the fajitas. I’m about to give up when I read this “Molcajetes: our version of an authentic fajita baked and served in a lava rock bowl from Mexico. Served with flour tortillas, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream”. Ok, sold.
So this giant rock bowl comes out with a steaming, bubbling mixture of chicken, beef and chorizo with peppers and onions (they had a seafood one too) in some kind of tomato-based sauce. I ate and assembled one molcajete-fajita-thing and just ended up eating the rest of the mixture straight off of my plate with a fork… it was SO good just by itself. I can’t even begin to describe the sauce it was in, I guess most similar to an enchilada sauce? But that doesn’t do it justice at all.
After the margs, guac and meal I couldn’t fathom ordering dessert. That is, until Andrew mentioned to our server that it was my birthday and he said “Oh great! You get a free dessert of your choosing”… Yeah so when the word “churro” came out of his mouth I was again, immediately sold.
These, too, came out hot and fresh, melting the mound of ice cream that was in the middle of the plate. Delicious, but I only could handle a couple bites, while Andrew had no issue polishing off the rest.
I’m not one to compensate the day after a big meal by eating less, but I just wasn’t even hungry at all. Still so happily satisfied from my birthday dinner I just grazed on little snacks the next day.
Another huge part of this week is the END OF CLINICAL! Can you believe that I’m already done with that rotation? Next up, Community. But since this post is already sufficiently long, I’ll save that update for tomorrow. Until then…
What’s your favorite thing to order at a Mexican restaurant?
And margaritas: blended or on the rocks?
